Artistic endeavors are not for the faint of heart; it demands that you be selfish with your time and energy. And, for some of us that can be challenging. Artistic expression begins with a dream, vision, and passion. When I am creating something on my own, not collaborating with a team, the DVP (dream vision passion) is always in play with my artistic expressions.
There is no course, no school, no university, no book that will teach you how to be a visionary, passionate, or a dreamer- ya' either got it or ya' don't. Some of us recognize our artistic abilities at a young age. Some like me, didn't until later on. My interest in the arts came in my late teens. I was a relatively boring teenager that didn't display or express any particular artistic abilities until I entered college.
My experience living on campus for four years was one of the best times of my life. Those four years introduced me to my creative side. To me, being around creative people was cool. It still is!

In my sophomore year in college I took a television production course and realized I wanted to be a television producer. I had not recognized or acknowledged any of my creative abilities until I began working in the film industry, surrounded by talented writers, directors, actors, and editors. In my formative and adolescent years I had not seen any real positive images of black and brown folks on television or in films; a wide spectrum of black life was primarily absent. I wanted to be part of the cadre of black women producers making a difference in the film and television industry!

When I decided to write, produce, and direct THE MUSIC GOT ME short film it felt like I had done it before. I had not. So, as I continue on this creative journey I remind myself of one of the creative passions I had many years ago- a filmmaker. I constantly step outta' my own way in order to create. I get better with each step. I must!

POETRY IS OPEN
here's
one...
open windows
by Kristen M.
The morning dissolves into the afternoon
Piercing sunlight parades through the transparency
of dangling drapes
Pigeons wearing snow white with a slice of grey and colored capes
Recklessly tap dance out of sync
Teens skip thorough the streets playing hooky in outlandish designs
adorned in pink
The man dressed in white and grayish blue
Delivers bills, postcards and letters
As elder women gloriously lean against satin pillows
With the windows open
